In Remembrance: Dancing for Orlando (Seeking Companies and Choreographers)

Dancers performing with one leg extended Noel Valero

In June of 2016, there was a tragic shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. This hate crime caused a lot of shock across the nation and facilitated a lot of conversations involving gun control and the hate the LGBTQ community continues to face.  In response, Awaken Dance Theater organized a tribute concert give local artists a place to express the grief and anger they felt, stand in solidarity with the LGBT community , and begin to heal. This event, which was called the Tribute to Orlando from the NYC Dance Community, was free and open to the public and helped 16 dance companies from all over New York City come together in under a week.

Almost one year later,  Awaken Dance Theater is joining withe the Rogue Dancers and Julie Rubin to organize an anniversary tribute concert. It will honor the lives lost, issues faces by the LGBTQ community,  and express the resilience and love we must show, especially in the current political atmosphere. The concert will take place on Saturday,  June 17th at 8pm,  and be held in the City Center Studios.

We are seeking pieces that speak specifically to this cause.   All styles of dance are welcome,  but only certain pieces will be selected due to overwhelming interest and the need to keep the tribute concert a certain length.    Dances may not be longer than 8 minutes.

To apply, please fill out the form below.  There is no fee to apply.   Applications should be submitted no later than May 1st.
