Call for Choreographers

ABOUT

We, Krishna Washburn and Kayla Hamilton, are two visually impaired movement artists who have decided to partner on an artistic project. This is our first artistic endeavor together and we are really excited about the potential and power of a shared sensory experience.

 

Krishna Christine Washburn is a Visually Impaired dancer and disability rights activist from Harlem, New York City. She has performed with Heidi Latsky Dance, Infinity Dance Theater, Marked Dance Project, and LEIMAY and specializes in ballet, contemporary, and Butoh performance styles. This year marks the beginning of Darkroom Ballet, her educational dance workshop and professional development system for blind, visually impaired, and sighted dancers, at Gibney Dance. She has a continuing artistic collaboration with Ntilit, which has included performances at Immersive Gallery, Chashama, the Eotechnic Sensorium, and Queens Museum, as well as video projects, and will include new work at the Cooper Hewitt in 2018.  Other upcoming projects include In the Pines, a project with Patrice Miller at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, and Vangeline’s Butoh Procession to commemorate 9/11.  She is incredibly excited to enter the Darkroom with Kayla Hamilton.

 

Kayla Hamilton resides in the Bronx, NY where she teaches eighth grade social studies.In addition to being an educator, Kayla dances with Skeleton Architecture,a collective of black womyn and gender non-conforming artists who use the practice of improvisation to create, play and challenge. She also dances with Sydnie L. Mosley Dances and Gesel Mason Performance Projects. Under the name K. Hamilton Projects, Kayla produces performance work, organizes community events and writes arts integrated curriculum.

 

REQUIREMENTS
Krishna and Kayla are committed to working with artists of diverse experience and backgrounds, and will utilize this application process as a way to discover who would be the best choreographic collaborator. We invite choreographers to submit an application to create a new work highlighting the beauty, challenges and risk we experience as individuals.

 

Our choreographer must…

Have availability in the mid afternoon- evenings

Resonate with our values: Representation, Sensitivity, Inclusion, and Communication

Be patient in nature

Be a problem solver

Be organized

 

The new work must:

Be a “completed” work by the end of our time together

Demonstrate thorough research of the piece’s conceptual underpinning via any historical, social, political, or philosophical source material

Be rigorously researched through the body before and during the creative process

Take risks choreographically and presentationally

 

HOW TO APPLY

To apply for consideration, choreographers musts complete this application.

 

Choreographers will be notified by October 20, 2017 if they have moved to the next round.
