More information about the piece: Part documentary, part dance performance and part installation, Nostalgia for the New investigates migration and specifically focuses on undocumented immigrants, who crossed the U.S. border from South & Central America in order to start a new life in the U.S. In the ongoing public discussion about immigration, the individual human being behind the larger debate are often forgotten. Through this socio-critical project we try to gain a better understanding of each personal story. Using interviews, video, sound and movement we explore emotions like fear, hope and sacrifice, which have accompanied their journeys. Nostalgia for the New strives to engage the audience politically and socially and raise awareness about the many facets of immigration. Part of this project will be an installation by award-winning photographer Louie Palu, using material from his own research along the U.S.- Mexico border. The location of the performance itself aims to immerse the audience deeper into the experience. It will take place in the labyrinth of tunnels underneath the Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College.
