About Nimbus Dance

Nimbus focuses its work on the intersection between high-level dance and innovative ways of involving communities and audiences. Founded in 2005, Nimbus presents performances and programs to diverse audiences locally and on tour, serving present audiences and building future ones. In addition to work by Artistic Director Samuel Pott, the Company commissions dances by leading international dancemakers including Pedro Ruiz (Cuba/USA), Huang Yi (Taiwan), Korhan Basaran (Turkey), Xiao-Xiong Zhang (Australia/Taiwan), and Darshan Singh Bhuller (United Kingdom). Nimbus was named among “Best Dance Performances of 2016” by The Huffington Post. It has received acclaim for its program Lynchtown/Thistown, in which it presents significant, historic, socio-political modern dance works including Pearl Primus’ Strange Fruit (1942) and Charles Weidman’s Lynchtown (1936) and leads community members in the creation of dance that responds to socio-political subjects in their community. Based in Jersey City, Nimbus weaves together artistic excellence and community impact through company performances, programs for youth and seniors, partnerships with institutions such as the Jersey City Board of Education, and collaborations with notable composers and visual artists.

Nimbus’ programs impact 16,000 people each year, and its educational programs serve over 3,000 annually in the Jersey City public schools. In its 14th season, Nimbus performs in Jersey City, New York City, and tours nationally at many of the most prestigious venues including the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM Fisher), NJPAC, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival.

The School of Nimbus offers training in ballet, modern, performance, and other dance techniques for over 140 youth ages 2 and above and offers a pre-professional program. The Nimbus Company dancers serve as faculty at The School of Nimbus.

In winter 2020, Nimbus will relocate to the Nimbus Arts Center at the Lively, a newly-constructed, state-of-the-art facility in Jersey City’s Powerhouse Arts District. At the new space, Nimbus will expand its reach, develop partnerships, and deepen its impact. The Nimbus Arts Center represents one of the most significant investments in the arts in Jersey City history.
