Assistant Professor of Dance
Bates College invites applications for a tenure track position in Dance within the Department of Theater and Dance beginning in September of 2020. Bates is an undergraduate liberal arts institution offering a major and minor in dance and hosting the internationally acclaimed Bates Dance Festival. Our students represent a wide range of interests and experiences as well as a diversity of identities in and through dance and we foster an intentional, equitable, inclusive and engaged community. Candidates with demonstrated success working with diverse, underrepresented and marginalized populations are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications: Master of Fine Arts degree or PhD in dance or a dance related area of study is required, as is a strong studio and creative profile; demonstrable college level teaching experience, preferably in a Department of Theater and Dance; evidence of commitment to diversity and inclusion in an academic environment. Evidence of a scholarly trajectory is desired, as is an expansive and interdisciplinary approach to the performing arts as a whole.
The position includes teaching in the studio and in the classroom, choreographing for students,
advising and mentoring students, coordination with visiting artists, dance concert production and collaboration with the Bates Dance Festival. In addition to teaching aspects of history/cultural context and dance composition with racially, ethnically, culturally and gender diverse content, and having a strong studio teaching practice, candidates must be qualified to teach in at least one of the following areas: a non-european, popular global, or diasporic dance form; dance and technology; or anatomy/kinesiology/neuroscience. As a faculty member in the Department of Theater and Dance, there will be opportunities to design new courses in areas of specialization. Collaboration both within the department and across the curriculum is both expected and well supported. Bates is home to the Harward Center for Community Partnership and the Department values and supports community engaged pedagogy.
Candidates must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to serve in leadership roles within the Dance program. Strong administrative skills, and a commitment to collaboration in a small liberal arts community are essential for a successful candidacy.
Bates College is committed to enhancing the diversity of the campus and the curriculum. We welcome applications from candidates with the ability to contribute to the college’s historical and continuing commitment to social and cultural diversity, inclusiveness, and the transformative power of difference. The search committee expects applicants to identify in an explicit way their strengths and experiences in these areas and to describe how their teaching, research, and outreach interests can further this goal.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit the following materials: a letter of application (cover letter), curriculum vitae, a statement on inclusive pedagogies in teaching, a research statement that must include links to performance work, and includes written research outcomes where applicable as well; three letters of recommendation, and two sample syllabi of relevant courses. Review of applications begins October 15th, 2019 and will continue until the position has been filled. Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check.
