Coding Residency Teaching Artist

 

Young Audiences New York (YANY) is looking for a Teaching Artist to lead a Coding residency at a High School in East Harlem from September 2019 through May 2020. Through the residency, students will learn skills and a strong foundation in Coding, connect coding to their interests, and learn more about careers in the tech field. Sessions will take place two afternoons every week from 4 to 5:30pm. Under the guidance of YANY program staff, the Teaching Artist (TA) will design and facilitate a curriculum in partnership with school administrators. As with all YANY Teaching artists, this position plays a vital role in building and sustaining YANY school partnerships. TAs are a valuable resource to the school community representing YANY and our mission through their work with students and staff.

 

Residency Teaching Artist Roles and Responsibilities

Lead weekly after-school coding workshops two afternoons per week, managing a class of 15 to 20 students.
Participate in and lead recruitment efforts for student participation in this after-school residency.
Guide students in developing a digital portfolio that is showcased at a mid-year and end-of-year culminating event.
Develop a residency model in which students create, design and present a project (i.e.: a digital app, website or game).
Manage classroom duties such as attendance, storing equipment, and administering snacks.
Participate in Annual Teaching Artist Kickoff.
Attend Professional Development offerings provided by YANY.
Facilitate planning meetings with school partner in preparation for residency and schedule additional planning meetings as authorized.
Schedule residency sessions with school contact and communicate with YANY program manager and the school regarding any scheduling changes.
Sustain regular, thorough, and professional communication with YANY program staff throughout the residency.
Submit curricular materials, such as lesson plans, residency planning guides, evidence of student learning, residency assessment and reflection documents.
Attend meetings with the Program Manager and school partner to reflect on residency outcomes and teaching practice.
Collect media release forms from all students in the class, as requested.
Submit orders for supplies related to residency activities from approved list of YANY vendors.
Submit receipts for reimbursement in a timely fashion. (1-2 weeks after purchase)
Work in partnership with after school coordinator and school administrators to plan culminating projects.
Lead the planning of student field trips working in collaboration with school partners and YANY staff.
Inform YANY staff of any changes to residency plans and scheduling adjustments.

 

 

Competencies/Skills

Loves children and is passionate about their development
Fluency in at least one programming language, Scratch, JavaScript, Arduino C, and/or Swift preferred
At least three years of experience teaching Coding residencies in a High School environment
Ability to identify and communicate needs for residency including equipment, materials, ideal space, and additional support needed
Demonstrates a commitment to being a reflective practitioner constantly developing new skills and strengthening the outcomes of their work with students
Ability to effectively align curricula with educational standards (including Common Core and NYC and NYC arts standards)
Skilled at designing lesson plans that cultivate both artistic skill building and challenge understandings of self and the world
Effective time management skills
Strong communication skills
Can successfully articulate the effectiveness of their work to school stakeholders and YANY staff
Understands classroom management as successful student engagement and utilizes tools that generate interest and increases efficacy toward learning
Brings creativity, flexibility, and joy to collaboration with students, school partners, and YANY staff
