ABOUT ART IN THE COMMUNITY GARDEN COMMISSIONING FELLOWS PROGRAM:

Through the Art in the Community Garden Commissioning Fellows Program, artists will receive a commission to create an experimental, rigorous, and thought-provoking site-based work for a NYC community garden. LEIMAY works with gardens located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and in the Williamsburg, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and Gowanus neighborhoods of Brooklyn. LEIMAY and our partner, New York Restoration Project, will work together with the artists and a community liaison to determine which community garden aligns best with the artist’s vision and the needs of the community. By prioritizing the selection of artists to gardens in their home community or geographic interest, Art in the Community Garden Commissioning Fellows Program will foster a local exchange that facilitates an intermingling of art and nature, and a cross-pollination of artists and community members.

This Commissioning Fellows Program nurtures a half-year long creative research period for 6 artists on an annual basis. It provides an arena for artistic exploration, professional development, and public outreach to a local community of movement-based artists with an interdisciplinary practice who seek a space to create and share their work in a supportive environment.

Additionally, LEIMAY provides artists with space to work alongside a community of peers who support each other through artistic feedback and an ongoing discussion about the value of process and practice as a means of nurturing collaboration and the advancement of craft within multiple fields.

SELECTED ARTISTS RECEIVE:

Up to 60 hours of fully subsidized studio time during a 6-month period (Commissioned fellows do not incur in any membership costs and will book their own hours through our online booking system.)

Presentation of an outdoor public performance as part of the OUTSIGHT presenting series in a community garden co-presented by LEIMAY and the New York Restoration Project (NYRP).

A stipend for the presentation of new work at the OUTSIGHT series.***

Opportunities to participate in peer showings to engage in conversation around your work with other commissioned artists and LEIMAY Artistic Directors.

Access to Material for the Arts supplies.

The inclusion of commissioned fellows activities in LEIMAY’s email newsletter and online publication/network (conectom).

Discounts for performances presented by LEIMAY at other venues and to LEIMAY LUDUS Classes, Labs, and Intensives.

 ***LEIMAY has applied for additional funding support for this program and there is a possibility for higher commissioning fees. A $100 fee is guaranteed but if we are awarded funding, it could increase up to 150%. 

ART IN THE COMMUNITY GARDEN COMMISSION FELLOWS TIME PERIOD:

The commissioning fellows program lasts for 6 months: April-September. 6 Artists will be selected. Studio access and production counseling will be provided within the program’s period.

Interviews will be scheduled at CAVE in Brooklyn, NY February 1-2 between 4pm and 7pm, 2020. 

Artists will be notified of selection and award February 29, 2020.

September 12,13, 19, 20, 26, 27 - OUTSIGHT Performance at an NYRP Community Garden (Each artist will only perform on one of the 6 days)

September 27 - Celebration with garden and LEIMAY communities (It will take place after the performance at 3pm)

September 29- Final Group Exit Meeting

ELIGIBILITY & EXPECTATIONS:

Eligible artists must be dancers, choreographers, or other movement-based artists with a body of work that engages with other disciplines outside of their movement-based practices.

Must have presented your work professionally and outside of a school environment for at least five years (*At least 3 different works)

Must live in the NYC Metropolitan Area.

Half of the program slots are reserved for artists of color.

Half of the program slots are reserved for artists living in proximity to NYRP gardens.

Artists must present the work-in-progress that they plan to present in OUTSIGHT at BOTH peer showing dates.

Show a new finished site-based work (duration of at least 30 min.) in a community garden as part of LEIMAY's OUTSIGHT presenting series, a presenting partnership between LEIMAY and New York Restoration Project.

Must have an interest in creating a new work specifically for one of NYRP’s gardens and in interacting with the garden’s neighborhood group and community. These are the gardens up for consideration:

Gil Hodges Community Garden (Gowanus)

Scholes Street Garden (Williamsburg)

Greene Acres Community Garden (Bed-Stuy)

Dorothy Strelsin Memorial Community Garden (LES)

Submit one process article to conectom (LEIMAY’s online publication)

ABOUT LEIMAY:

LEIMAY is a multidimensional entity lead by the artist duo: Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya. As an arts organization its mission is to stimulate dialogue between the visual and live arts; develop LEIMAY's LUDUS; offer studio and performing space for emerging and established artists; and develop and tour new and existing individual and collaborative creations by its artistic directors, as well as their work with the LEIMAY Ensemble. LEIMAY endeavors take place at its home, CAVE, located in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn as well as at other venues in New York, the Americas, and beyond.

In addition to touring, exhibiting, producing, and developing Moriya and Garnica’s artistic work, and the LEIMAY Ensemble work, LEIMAY runs the following programs: 1) LUDUS, a training program and teaching residency. 2) OUTSIGHT a presenting series. 3) STUDIO SPACES & FELLOWSHIP a low-cost hourly rental facility and an inexpensive and fully subsidized permanent studio & resource share. 4) conectom, a free online artist and audience network and online publication. 

Past programs included SOAK (‘12-’18), the NY Butoh Festival ('03-'09), the CAVE gallery ('96-'06), Vietnamese Artist-in-Residence Program (‘04-05’), Butoh Workshops ('01-'07), NY Butoh Kan Training Initiative/NY Butoh Kan Teaching Residency ('08 -'11).

ABOUT THE LEIMAY STUDIO:

LEIMAY’s Studio at CAVE (58 Grand Street, Brooklyn, NY) is a 450 square foot space with sprung wood floor and 16 ft ceilings with skylights to bring in natural light and is equipped with a stereo system, folding chairs, and a table, and an adjacent restroom. The space is heated during the winter and has fans for the summer. Chosen artists will be responsible for self-management and keeping the studio clean.

 ABOUT XIMENA AND SHIGE:  (Program Counselors and LEIMAY Artistic Directors)

Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya are a Colombian and Japanese multidisciplinary artist duo. Their collaborative works manifest in live installations, performances, sculptures as well as publications, research, and community projects. Shige and Ximena are the co-founders and artistic directors of the arts organization LEIMAY and the performance group the LEIMAY Ensemble. They work out of their home studio CAVE located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Their work has been presented at a number of art spaces including BAM, The New Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, The Watermill Center, HERE, Japan Society, and The Asian Museum of San Francisco. They have been nominated for the USA Artists Fellowship and the Herb Alpert Award.  They have been part of the Bessie Schonberg Individual Choreographers Residency at the Yard, the Watermill Center Residency Programs, and the HERE Artist in Residency Program. Ximena was a recipient of the Van Lier Fellowship for extraordinary stage directors, and recently she was a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of California Riverside. Her article ‘LEIMAY, CAVE, and the New York Butoh Festival’ has just been published in The Routledge Companion to Butoh Performance.

ABOUT THE OUTSIGHT SERIES:

OUTSIGHT is a performance series presented by LEIMAY in partnership with the New York Restoration Project. It features public performances by local artists working in movement-based practices curated by LEIMAY and set within one of NYRP’s community gardens. Founded by Bette Midler in 1995, NYRP preserves and protects gardens and other green spaces in New York City. It partners with local communities, public agencies, and the private sector to acquire, create, maintain, and program public open spaces. They own and manage 52 community gardens throughout the five boroughs and believe that “clean, green neighborhoods are fundamental to our quality of life and that every community in New York City deserves an oasis of natural beauty.” 

Previous LEIMAY presenting programs include the New York Butoh Festival, the SOAK presenting series and 19 years of gallery programming at CAVE.
