Founded in 2005 by world-renowned ballet master Edward Ellison, Ellison Ballet is an award-winning year-round, full-day training program designed to meet the needs of talented, dedicated students (ages 12-19) who seek the very highest standards of classical ballet training. This unique Russian/Vaganova-based training offers every opportunity for gifted young dancers to explore and discover their greatest individual artistic potential in preparation for a successful career in dance, with nearly 100% of its graduates obtaining professional company contracts and receiving numerous top prizes at international ballet competitions. Included in Ellison Ballet’s training curriculum are the three Summer Intensive programs which have become a destination for some of the most talented students in North America and abroad, offering the highest quality ballet education for serious students.  

Job Descriptions

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Resident Advisor t is responsible for supervising 16 Ellison Ballet students between the ages of 15 and 21. The RA will collaborate with the Ellison Ballet administration to ensure the well-being of all residents. This position requires living at our residence, located in Manhattan on the Upper West Side, for the entire fall and spring semesters (September through May) with a possibility to extend for our Summer Intensive programs. 

This is a five-day per week position with a flexible schedule. The Resident Assistant may have another job and/or be enrolled in school.

Compensation includes housing in a single room with a private bathroom and kitchenette, laundry on-site, a monthly MetroCard, all utilities including internet, and a stipend of $500/week.

Key responsibilities include:

Providing a safe, healthy, supportive and fun living experience for our resident dancers.

Accept responsibility for and act as a supportive authority figure for all residents.

Maintain discipline and enforce rules in a compassionate and assertive manner, such as a curfew, quiet hours, etc.

Use conflict resolution and mediation skills to assist residents with housing-related problems. Inform Ellison Ballet staff of problems that may interfere with the well-being of student life in the dorms.

Be on-call for residents and emergencies during designated hours and accompany sick or injured residents to medical facilities as needed. Notify parents or guardians of a sick or injured resident should such a trip to a medical facility occur.

Conduct nightly bed checks.

Be on-site to welcome residents during move-in.

Organize occasional social activities and outings for residents.

Be willing to undergo a background check, CPR training, and periodic Covid testing.

Other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and abilities:

Ability to work with a small, international student body of dedicated, driven young artists.

Age 22 or higher is preferred.

Valid driver’s license 

Excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to work productively with students, parents, and staff.

Friendly and nurturing personality with the ability to support students and command respect.

Conflict resolution skills and the ability to mediate situations as they arise.

Ability to respond appropriately in disciplinary and emergency situations.
