Work/Trade at SMUSH - Rehearse/Develop/Produce Your Work for Free

Join SMUSH as a Gallery Work/Trade Assistant!

Be part of the SMUSH Gallery community! Rehearse, develop, and produce your work for free! Come to events for free! Help us survive & thrive! Gallery work/study assistants provide valuable face-to-face interaction to our diverse community of artists and the art-curious in Jersey City, and provide invaluable services to our young and vibrant arts organization.  

 

Applications accepted on a rolling basis & until the position is filled. Candidates should be available for a commitment of at least 6 months (Sept 25, 2021 - Feb 26, 2022), but a commitment through the end of June ‘22 is even better. 

 

Applicants must be 18+. Working artists will be given preference. 

 

REQUIREMENTS

Work Saturday afternoons, 5 hour shift (1:30-6:30p; open to the public 2-6p)

Communicate proactively with gallery leadership, including via meetings, emails, and texts

*must provide own laptop computer for work sessions

 

BENEFITS

Free rehearsal, performance, and other uses of gallery space (hour-for-hour for rehearsal, 5:1 for production)

Free ticket and +1 for gallery-produced performances and events 

Application/submission fees waived 

30% discount on art & merch 

Letter of recommendation (at the end of term), connection to other professional contacts and opportunities 

College credit may be arranged; please inquire for details

 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Clean and organize gallery spaces and supplies

Welcome guests and provide information about gallery art, events, and opportunities

Manage sales through Square

Assist with mailing list and community board

Send a shift report to gallery leadership

Co-host additional events (Feb 26, 2022 5p-12a; other events as needs and schedules allow)

 

EXCELLENT CANDIDATES WILL

Love art, artists, arts organizations, and talking about art of all kinds

Self-motivate, work best independently, and communicate clearly, thoroughly, professionally, and punctually 

Work well with Google Drive, Mailchimp, Squarespace, Square

Be enthusiastic about maintaining clean and orderly spaces

Embrace our mission, vision, and anti-racism & equity commitments 

Make their own artwork and will benefit from our work/trade resources
