FAQs

What do you mean by “studio time”?
Our studio memberships are meant to support your artmaking - use studio time for rehearsal, writing, research, development, team meetings, and creating! Artists of all disciplines are welcome.

Please note that your 10hrs/mo of studio time may not be used for teaching classes or workshops, holding photo/video shoots, or hosting events; studio members are able to book time for those activities separately at a 25% discount. Artists who choose not to comply may have their memberships terminated immediately and without refund.

How do I sign up for a membership?
Email us at hello@smushgallery.com. Tell us about your art practice and how you might use your studio time, and we’ll get you your paperwork, set an appointment for your orientation, and make arrangements for you to pay your membership fee and security deposit. We accept payment by check, credit card, and PayPal.

When can I start my studio membership?
Studio memberships begin the first of October 2021, January 2022, and April 2022. Paperwork, membership fees, and security deposits are due by the start of each membership session.

How do I book studio time?
Check the website for upcoming events (aka conflicts in the space), then email us at hello@smushgallery.com with your reservation requests. You will receive a confirmation email once your studio time is confirmed in the gallery calendar. We will make every effort to schedule you during your preferred time slots, and we encourage you to book as far in advance as your schedule allows.

What if I need to cancel my reservation?
Email us at hello@smushgallery.com to cancel. In keeping with our regular cancellation policy, there is no penalty for cancellations more than 7 days from your reservation. Cancellations made within 7 days of your reservation will count against your monthly hours.

What are the minimum and maximum number of hours I can reserve at a time?
There is a 2 hour minimum for studio reservations, and no maximum - you can book all 10 hours in one day if the gallery calendar allows!

Do my hours roll over from one membership cycle to the next?
Nope - so get in the studio and use those hours!

Why do I have to pay for my membership up front?
Our staff is extremely small (and works on a volunteer basis!), and batching our memberships allows us to remain efficient enough to offer a discounted membership program like this one. We understand that paying the total membership fee and security deposit up front may be prohibitive for some artists, and we hope that we will become more flexible as we grow.

What do I need to know about using the space?
The gallery comes as is, and will shift with our different visual art shows and events. All reasonable efforts will be made to leave the space in rehearsal-ready condition, meaning a broom-clean floor and plenty of open space. Members are asked to accommodate other changes to the space, including working around artwork. Please note that members will need to be able to lift and lower the gate independently (we will show you how!).

I missed the deadline! Can I still get a membership?
Maybe! Email us at hello@smushgallery.com and we’ll see what we can do.
