Lighting and Video Supervisor

Reports to: Production Stage Manager

Status: Temporary (project-based), W2, non-exempt

Salary: $1000-$1500/week, plus $500 prep per venue

A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, a New York-based dance company, seeks 1-2 Lighting & Video Supervisor(s) to join its rotating touring staff. A.I.M has a robust tour schedule, performing at approximately 25 domestic and international venues in the 2022-23 season, including one New York City engagement. This is a tour-based position that has the potential to grow into a full-time role, depending on the candidate’s interests and the company’s evolving needs. The ideal candidate has strong professional experience, including with touring dance.  

 

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Contemporary dance company A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, considered “one of the most consistently excellent troupes working today” (The New York Times), provides multifaceted performances, educational programming, and community-based workshops across the globe. Led by acclaimed Choreographer and Artistic Director Kyle Abraham’s innovative vision, the work of A.I.M is galvanized by Black culture and history, and grounded in a conglomeration of unique perspectives; described by Abraham as a “post-modern gumbo” of movement exploration.

 

A.I.M is one of the most active touring dance companies in the United States, with an audience base as diverse as A.I.M’s movement vocabulary, drawing inspiration from a multitude of sources and dance styles. Since A.I.M’s founding in 2006, Abraham has created more than 15 original works for and with the company. To expand its repertoire and offer a breadth of dance work to audiences, A.I.M commissions new works and performs existing works by outside choreographers, such as Trisha Brown, Bebe Miller, Andrea Miller, and current A.I.M dancer Keerati Jinakunwiphat.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborate with lighting and video designers to realize their visions within the company’s budgetary and touring parameters.

Generate all lighting and video drafting and paperwork for new company productions, including light plots, magic sheets, and concept sheets.

Work with video designers to build Qlab workspaces for video playback.

Maintain and update the company’s repertory light plot for mixed repertory programs.

Maintain a strong working knowledge of all current lighting technologies.

Assist the Production Stage Manager in reviewing venue technical specifications and contract review.

Advance all lighting and video information to venues, including negotiating equipment rentals.

Adapt the company’s lighting and video designs to each venue, including generating venue-specific drafting and paperwork.

Oversee the load-in and load-out of company lighting and video effects and equipment.

Call lighting focus.

Call video focus and map video projections.

Set lighting cues at each venue, maintaining the integrity of the original designs within the constraints of the venue.

Attend all technical and dress rehearsals.

Oversee lighting and video notes calls.

Oversee channel check before each performance, ensuring all equipment is in working order.

Provide support as needed during performances, including assisting the Production Stage Manager in supervising backstage changes and/or operating the lighting console when necessary.

Be prepared to call performances in case of emergency.

As needed, assist the Production Stage Manager with scenery, sound, and other production needs.

With the Production Stage Manager, provide production planning and support for residencies, galas, APAP showings, and other company activities as needed.

With the Production Stage Manager, organize the storage and maintenance of company lighting equipment.

With the Production Stage Manager, maintain and organize video playback files.

Support the Production Stage Manager with the packing, loading, unloading, transportation, and storage of all production materials.

Other duties as assigned.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Navigate tight spaces regularly, ascend and descend stairs regularly, and ascend and descend ladders occasionally.

Frequently observe choreography and perceive lighting and music.

Communicate instructions using headsets.

Occasionally perform tasks during strobe effects.

Occasionally transport loads up to 50 pounds, including moving suitcases and road cases onto and off of vehicles and up and down stairs and ramps.

Occasionally perform production tasks that involve positioning oneself to work on the floor and to access items above.  

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE:

At least 3-5 years of professional experience in lighting supervision; experience in touring dance highly preferred.

Broad working knowledge of all aspects of lighting design and theatrical lighting technology, and working knowledge of video design and technology.

Well-rounded understanding of theatrical production, including at least a basic understanding of sound, scenery, soft goods, and rigging. Additional experience and expertise in select areas is a plus.

Strong visual design sensibility, including the ability to understand designers’ intents.

Strong organizational and project management skills, including excellent attention to detail and the diplomacy and judgement needed to balance multiple tasks.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Willing to work independently and to collaborate with others.

Highly proficient in Vectorworks and Lightwright.

Proficient in ETC Eos programming, including basic moving light programming.

Proficient in Qlab for video.

Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications.

Video editing proficiency is a plus. 

An active driver’s license and the ability to drive vehicles including cargo vans within New York City and on tour is preferred.

Able to work irregular hours and to travel both domestically and internationally.

COVID-19 vaccination or willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccination required.
