ABOUT HARLEM STAGE

Harlem Stage, hailed by The New York Times as “an invaluable incubator of talent,” catalyzes the profound influence Harlem has had on American arts and culture to foster talent, commission new performing arts work, uplift a diversity of perspectives, and create opportunities for artists of color to freely explore and innovate in ways that are relevant and socially significant. Housed in a historically landmarked building known as the Gatehouse, with a seating capacity of 125, and boasting five MacArthur Genius Fellowship and two Pulitzer Prize awardees among its artistic family, Harlem Stage’s mission has been to bridge the rich and diverse artistic legacy of Harlem to contemporary artists of color.                         

Harlem Stage’s education programming introduces New York City school children every year to the unparalleled excitement of live performance through robust programming both at Harlem Stage and at a network of partner schools. The Education program also includes adult education programs, community engagement activities, and a Professional Training Program, including fellowships and internships. For over ten years, Harlem Stage has been in partnership with Sound Business Inc. (SBI) located within A. Philip Randolph High School located at 443 W. 135th Street New York, New York. As the only in-residence, non-profit organization operating within a NYC DOE public high school for over 30 years, SBI strives to be an incubator of youth empowerment, community building, and social change. Through this partnership, Harlem Stage supports SBI by co-managing their College and Career Prep Institute’s Performing Arts Program which currently offers a multitude of afterschool performing arts ensembles for students to participate in.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Reporting jointly to the Education and Community Engagement Manager and Sound Business Institute’s Executive Director, Kelly Downing, and working with the designated Student Leader of your assigned dance ensemble, the Dance Teaching Artist will deliver high quality dance instruction to a group of 5 to 15 high school-aged students over the course of 14 weeks. TA’s will be responsible for choreographing a dance for the final showcase alongside the dance group’s student leader. The final performance will involve a multimedia component that will be created with the assistance of the Sound Business Institute’s Executive Director. 

Harlem Stage is hiring Dance Teaching Artists for the following styles: Hip-Hop/Urban, Desi (30% Classical Indian/70% Bollywood), West African, Boys Step (United Brothers Step), West Indian, Latin Caribbean, and K-Pop 

LOCATION

A.Philip Randolph Campus High School

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO

Adapting a curricular framework to include student’s interests and cultures                                

Producing and choreographing culminating 4-5 minute dance/multimedia presentations at assigned site (you will receive individual assistance for all multimedia components)                                                    

Collaborating effectively with student leader and communicating regularly with supervisory staff 

Submitting complete lesson plans, timesheets, reports and other vital administrative documentation      

Reaching students across diverse developmental levels

QUALIFICATIONS

High school degree or relevant experience working with young people

2-3 years teaching experience

Ability to work well in a racially and culturally diverse community

Effective and equity-driven classroom management techniques

Highly motivated with excellent time management, organizational, and problem solving skills

Experience with video and photo documentation, social media, and digital content a plus

Technological capacity to provide virtual facilitation if needed, as well as knowledge of virtual platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, etc

Demonstrated experience in social justice and youth empowerment

BENEFITS 

Teaching Artists will be paid $80 per hour which includes class prep time and travel. The Teaching Artist pay scale is based on experience and expertise.
