TITLE:               Associate Artistic Director        
STATUS:           Full-Time, Year-Round
LOCATION:       In-Person or Hybrid In-Person/Remote  (onsite work is required from June 1st to August 30th, with a 6-day work week during the Festival).
REPORTS TO:    Executive and Artistic Director
DEPARTMENT:  Executive
SUPERVISES:   Director of Preservation, Director of The School, Director of Community Engagement, Producing Director, Director of Technical Production.         
WORKS WITH:  Deputy Director and all department heads.
COMPENSATION: $100,000- $130,000

SUMMER ONLY:  three meals a day, free access to classes, performances, talks, and studio usage.
 
POSITION OVERVIEW
 
Jacob’s Pillow seeks an Associate Artistic Director (AAD) to oversee the program portfolio which includes archives and preservation, audience engagement, community engagement, in person performances, artist residencies, and The School at Jacob’s Pillow. This role will work closely with the Executive and Artistic Director to set the strategic direction of programming at the Pillow, and will be responsible for integrating programming areas operationally and strategically with an eye to achieving the organization’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) goals. 
 
The AAD will supervise the departments associated with programming and will work to understand their needs and support their advancement.  The AAD works to ensure that the goals of the departments under their supervision are in line with our strategic plan.  Over the next five years, work with the Executive and Artistic Director to facilitate the digital integration of the organization’s programming areas. The AAD will be a strong partner to colleagues in the field, bring progressive ideas back to the team, and challenge the organization to innovate and remain relevant in a changing world.  The AAD also serves on the curatorial team at Jacob’s Pillow, determining Festival and Pillow Lab artists.  Other members of the team are the Executive and Artistic Director, the  Associate Curators, and the team is supported by the Producing Director. The School, Archives, and Community Engagement have autonomy to determine artists/scholars who work in their programs but closely collaborate with artists/themes that surface in Festival planning. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Leadership
?      Ensure the highest level of programs and services meet the needs of a diverse set of constituencies
?      Integrate existing and new programming with great depth and integrity; outline and implement  programs that exist cross-departmentally
?      Identify and promote innovative programming that supports and challenges the status quo.
?      Be part of the overall curatorial team for the institution as well as for each programming department, serving as a sounding board, connector of ideas, and source of external ideas.
?      Lead cross-departmental programs, including Pillow Lab Residencies, National Dance Presenters Forum, and College Partnership Program.
?      Staff the Education Committee of the Board, attend Community Engagement Committee meetings and other committee meetings as assigned.
 
Reporting & Marketing
?      Work with program leaders to define, document, and report on programmatic impact, including monthly internal programming briefs.
?      Lead conversations about programmatic strategy.
?      Use quantitative skills to guide the program team's assessment of data about outputs and outcomes and lead program evaluation.
?      Work with the Chief Marketing Officer to tell the story of programs and with the Chief Philanthropy Officer to fund programs.
Management
?      Lead, manage, and inspire the programming departments.
?      Ensure internal role clarity and accountability and foster cross-departmental cooperation.
?      Translate organizational vision and strategy into executable program goals and long-range plans.
?      Utilize dynamic coaching styles to encourage growth and manage productive conflict.
?      Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
?      Determine staffing plans to achieve program goals and objectives.
 
Budgeting & Finance
?      Work with leadership to ensure investments are sustainable and aligned with mission, vision, and values.
?      Foster a continuing culture of strategic decision-making around expenditures.
?      Play a key role in the annual budgeting process, ensuring future plans match money to the mission.
?      Monitor and report on program financials.
?      Ensure that programs have a sound financial strategy and financial systems and controls in place.
?      Support senior directors in achieving earned revenue goals.
External Relations
?      Act as an ambassador for Jacob’s Pillow and speak persuasively on our mission and vision in local, regional, and nationally prominent settings.
?      Listen carefully, speak persuasively, and anticipate concerns of all constituencies, including artists, audiences, alumni, community members, staff, and board.
?      Coordinate with Department heads in the cultivation of partnerships with higher learning. institutions and work with area cultural organizations on shared programming; represent the Pillow at local and regional gatherings.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
?      Office setting: including sitting, standing, walking, and bending.
?      Frequent interruptions.
?      Working in inclement weather.
?      Working in outdoor wooded areas.
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
?      Masters degree or other equivalent professional experience in the arts or education field is required.
?      Minimum of ten years of leadership and work experience in a nonprofit arts organization overseeing multiple programs and people.
?      Knowledge of and experience in dance, music, the arts, community engagement, and education.
?      Commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion and willingness to engage and empower staff at all levels of the organization.
?      Strong management skills, an adaptable style to work collaboratively, and an enthusiasm for management.
?      Demonstrated experience managing a high-performing, multicultural team in a structure that includes professional development and mentorship.
?      Strong analytical skills and the ability to help coach others to think strategically.
?      Proven ability to work in an evolving organization and make informed decisions in the context of strategic organizational goals and policies.
?      Must be organized, detail-oriented, and have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
?      Excellent critical thinking skills with the ability to effectively prioritize.
?      Strong relationship builder who can find common ground, build consensus, and strengthen collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
?      Ability to handle confidential materials with discretion.
?      Experience managing and monitoring budgets.
