Six Degrees Affordable Class Series is back! Looking for a place to connect with new artists and challenge your practice? Come dance with us on June 22 from 12-1:45pm. Location available in the Google Registration Form.

This month, class will be taught by Joey Anderson who comes to NYC via Salt Lake City.

Joey Anderson (he/they) is a dance artist and educator based in New York City and his hometown, Salt Lake City. In New York, Joey has guested with Selah Dance Collective for their show, “Sound and Smoke,” directed by Meredith Ventura. He also has presented his own work in collaboration with Myles Woolstenhulme through Verbal Animal’s festival, “Queer Noise.” In Salt Lake, Joey collaborates with FLEET Co-Op, directed by Shelby Taylor. Joey co-created their immersive show, “Monomyth,” in November 2023 and presented his solo show, “Where Love Lived First.” Before FLEET, Joey apprenticed with SALT Contemporary Dance for their ‘21-‘22 season directed by Joni McDonald.  He graduated from BYU with his BA in dance in 2021, where he grew his interest in the overlap between art and politics.

Joey's contemporary class has three parts. It begins with an improvisational task-based warmup followed by developing floor work coordinations across the floor. To end class, we learn a phrase incorporating tasks and coordinations from the prior two sections with the option to be filmed for your own records/reels.

Joey's movement and andragogy has been informed by his past affiliations with SALT Contemporary Dance, FLEET Co-Op, and Brigham Young University. His studies with Laja Field, Akira Yoshida, Courtney Mazeika, and Antonin Rioche have also influenced his andragogical approach. Everything in class is by invitation to emphasize the dancers’ agency. Modifications are always welcome as well as stepping out to observe, take notes, use the restroom, etc.
Hope to see you in class!
