Since our founding in 2019, we have empowered dance educators through specialized programs designed to connect cultural history with modern pedagogy, offering residencies, workshops, and professional development across NYC schools and communities.

Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Artist Educator with a strong foundation in both the practice and cultural context of dance. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience, a commitment to research rooted in lived experiences (not limited to academia), and the ability to both lecture and instruct in various dance forms. The Artist Educator will engage students in understanding the historical and sociocultural significance of dance, while also developing their technical and creative abilities.

We highly encourage dance educators of the African Diaspora teaching dances of the African Diaspora to apply, in recognition of the barriers these educators often face within the field of dance education. Our goal is to create opportunities for these artists to share their knowledge and cultural heritage with the next generation.

Key Responsibilities:

-Deliver high-quality dance instruction, focusing on both technique and creative expression.

-Provide historical, cultural, and sociopolitical context during lectures and discussions.

-Choreograph original pieces and guide students in their own creative processes.

-Create inclusive, equitable learning environments where all students feel welcome and supported, irrespective of their background or skill level.

-Implement effective pedagogical practices rooted in sound teaching methods that promote student engagement and growth, while honoring the culture from which the dance originates.

-Adjust lessons to be developmentally appropriate for children, ensuring content is accessible and meaningful for their stage of growth.

-Contribute to curriculum development, ensuring lessons are aligned with both cultural relevance and technical excellence.

-Attend professional development trainings provided by Dance Culture.

Qualifications:

-Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in dance, with demonstrable success in diverse educational settings.

-Experience with research in dance, not necessarily academic but through travel, cultural immersion, or grounded, experiential learning in the dance tradition(s) taught.

-Ability to deliver lectures on the historical and sociocultural contexts of the dance styles taught, alongside technical instruction.

-Knowledge of pedagogy and teaching practices: Applicants should be able to articulate their teaching philosophy and demonstrate how it is grounded in specific teaching methods.

-Ability to choreograph original works, as well as mentor students in choreography.

-Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) is valued but not required. Without an advanced degree, significant professional experience, research, and/or extensive teaching experience must be demonstrated.

-Understanding of child development and the ability to adapt lessons accordingly for different age groups and developmental stages.

Compensation:
Commensurate with experience and aligned with the tiered compensation model at Dance Culture LLC. Starting rate is $80/hour, with growth potential based on experience and contribution.
