ALONG
A low-tech, science fiction based “girl power” led adventure, ALONG imagines a place where different worlds and body languages confuse, collide, and waveringly communicate. This is a stark meeting of ‘super-heroes’ stranded on a desert isle. Since there is no shared language, it starts from scratch to build a commonality of difference.
Artistic Director/Choreographer Sally Silvers has an on-going fascination with the poetic as well as the social meanings of movement — to offer a no-holds-barred exploration of movement possibilities often wittily tilted toward the eccentric, awkward, and unexpected. Resonating from the movement are the motifs of risk, vulnerability, playfulness, and extremity. Often operating in areas between idiomatic dance and unconventional movement, the work keeps its focus on clearly defined if unusual structures for the articulated body. Her meticulously madcap dances engage experimentation at the edges of drama, fierceness, and hope. The company has had a commitment to working with composers and live music from the beginning, & has performed with composers John Zorn, Lawrence “Butch” Morris, Ikue Mori, Bun-Ching Lam, Shelley Hirsch, George Lewis, Jim Staley, Michael Schumacher among others, and has been awarded two Meet the Composer/Choreographer grants for projects with Bruce Andrews and John Zorn.
Sally Silvers is a Guggenheim Foundation and New York Dance and Performing Arts “Bessie” award-winning choreographer who has been making work since the 1980’s. She has had articles, essays, and poems published in magazines, chapbooks, journals, and anthologies. She choreographed 3 musicals for the Sundance Theater Festival, is the co-director of 2 award-winning dance films & her work has been archived and recorded by the New York City Performing Arts Library. She is also known for several large dance community curatorial projects: TalkTalkWalkWalk (combining dance artists and poets) and Surprise Every Time, a festival of ‘live choreography’ – making work live in front of the audience on the spot. From 2005 to 2011 she danced in the new and historical works of Yvonne Rainer. www.SallySilversDance.com
