American Dance Platform: BalletX and Raphael Xavier at The Joyce Theater

BalletX, Philadelphia’s premier contemporary ballet, has been recognized by The New York Times for “three-dimensional dancing that you feel as you watch.” The company is set to perform Trey McIntyre’s Soul Train-inspired The Boogeyman, featuring music by Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Gilbert O’Sullivan, and Earth, Wind & Fire, plus a surprise premiere.

Known for his “artful and mesmerizing” (Dance Magazine) take on hip hop and breaking, Raphael Xavier makes his Joyce debut with works that possess a transcendent mix of poetry and precision. Drawing inspiration from his background as a photographer and musician, Xavier utilizes a unique approach to improvisation that results in performances that erupt with spontaneity. Xavier’s latest work, Point of Interest, features a soundscape of beats and spoken word, and bursts with his signature bravado and high-energy physicality.
