American Dance Platform: Ephrat Asherie Dance and Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE with Arturo O' Farrill and Resist at The Joyce Theate

Bessie-award winning choreographer Ephrat Asherie collaborates with renowned jazz pianist Ehud Asherie on Riff this, Riff that. Exploring the jazz dance roots of breaking, hip hop, and house, this brother and sister duo is joined by an all-star cast of performers who take on the choreographer’s rapid-fire movement, which features “compact bursts of choreography” that “bubble up and dissipate, quickly paving the way for something new” (The New York Times).

Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE returns with “vibrant and transformative” (Los Angeles Times) contemporary works steeped in traditional West African and Caribbean influences. Brown’s New Conversations: Iron Meets Water includes live Afro-Cuban music by GRAMMY-Award winner Arturo O’Farrill, and is inspired by the spirit Oxossi, a huntress who appears in both male and female forms in the Yoruba and Santeria religions. Also on tap is Upside Down, an excerpt from Brown’s 1998 work Destiny, which explores mourning and celebrates life.
