Bryant Park Picnic Performances: Contemporary Dance

Bryant Park Picnic Performances: Contemporary Dance Series Adam Jason Photography

Led by visionary choreographer David Dorfman since 1987, David Dorfman Dance (DDD) presents radically humanistic dance that hits at the heart of the human condition–creating invigorating, innovative and vibrant movement for and with everyday people.

Founded in 2005 by Francesca Harper, The Francesca Harper Project is a not-for-profit company dedicated to creating groundbreaking dance, music, and theater works. Francesca Harper’s direction and choreographic work serves as the artistic foundation for the company, but it is the innovation and commitment to humanity and diversity that is fundamental to The Francesca Harper Project. The company aspires to create a unique style – classical dance forms, deconstructed and fused with cutting-edge text, music, and film. The content of the pieces are rooted in the most fundamental themes of creation, imperfection, love, humanity, race, sexuality, politics, and identity. The Francesca Harper Project embraces and celebrates the spirit of diversity and individuality.

URBAN / TRIBE, lead by Mathew James, a descendant of the Chumash Indians, strives to create inclusive opportunities for artists with diverse backgrounds in hopes of delivering meaningful ideas about our complex culture.

The mission of Diversity of Dance, Inc., is to provide an environment where student artists from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds can achieve the highest levels of excellence through positive collaborations with teachers and peers. The mission is achieved through its summer intensive, residencies, workshops, and its Workforce program. Earl Mosley's Institute of the Arts' teachers and staff insure that every student is welcomed and celebrated in a non-competitive environment. The institute strives to build a community of dance which enables each student to connect both technically and spiritually with their own art and individuality, one where they can feel safe to learn and grow in preparation for the challenges that lie ahead for them in the world of dance, the workplace, and life.
