Building Racial Equity in the Arts through Dance (BREAD) The Financial Empowerment Program
Financial literacy is crucial to launching and sustaining any career. But often, our early education doesn’t prepare us for the “dollars and sense” reality of life. This is especially the case for artists! BREAD’s fall program will address the age-old dilemma of “living the life of our dreams” vs “making money.” The program is designed to provide financial education through the lens of racial inequality in underserved and marginalized communities, and integrates dance to help us move through the conversation in an embodied way.
Developed in collaboration with Tierra Bonds of Take Charge Credit Consulting and Mathew Heggem of 10kCreators.com, this comprehensive, 8-month program focuses on everything from money mindset and personal cash flow management practices to topics like taxes, banking and real estate. In addition to expert presentations and actionable resources, each session includes breakout-rooms to discuss the impact of racial inequalities within financial systems and how that impacts our ability to thrive.
Devon “Steel Toe” Wallace will lead short movement segments tailored to the themes of each session. These dance breaks offer an alternative way of absorbing the information through the body, whilst connecting the concepts of financial literacy to the work we do as movement artists. Segments will focus on stress-relieving stretches and groove patterns, fun movement activities, and useful dance tools to aid in the embodiment of this program’s core takeaways.
