"Ceiling In The Floor"

"Ceiling In The Floor" Mario Barberio

Years ago, two creative high school students met and became best friends through their love of music and art. A decade later, mental health issues have pulled their friendship apart. Part dance, part monologue, part live music, Ceiling In The Floor is the deeply personal true story of two artists who went from inseparable to non-speaking as the result of a quiet struggle with depression and suicide.

Two friends, Hilary and Brandon, formed a relationship based on their shared love of performing--Brandon through music, Hilary through dance. Brandon created music for Hilary to choreograph to, but sadly never got a chance to see the finished product. Ceiling In The Floor is built around diary entries written by Hilary that describe the relationship of the two, and Brandon’s music which describes his struggle with manic depression that eventually ended their friendship.

Told through monologue, music and dance, Ceiling is for anyone who has suffered or known someone who suffered from depression or suicidal thoughts. It is a thoughtful and compelling story of what it’s like to care about someone who battles mental illness.

Choreography by Lineage Artistic Director Hilary Thomas. Music and lyrics by Brandon Toh. Directed by Marisa Echeverria.

Approximate run time: 70 minutes.

Age appropriateness: Due to themes of suicide and the mention of drug use, discretion is advised when bringing children. There is no nudity or excessive profanity, but the show is recommended for everyone over 13 years old.
