Cheikh Tairou M’Baye West African Dance & Drum Workshops

Join Ailey Extension as we celebrate the legacy of Cheikh Tairou M’Baye with traditional West African Dance and Drum workshops on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26 at the Joan Weill Center for Dance – New York’s largest building dedicated to dance and the home of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Each day, dancers of all levels and backgrounds are invited to share rich heritage and powerful cultural experiences with renowned African dance instructors and master drummers during various daily workshops. The full schedule is as follows:

 

Saturday, May 25

9:30am-10:30am: FREE CLASS with Babacar M'Baye & EL Hadji Gueye (featuring music from Cheikh Tairou M’Baye)

10:30 - 12:00pm: Sabar Dance w/ Abdou Sylla (Japan)

12:00 - 1:30pm: Djembe Dance w/ David Dioubate (Paris)

1:30 – 2:30PM: Sabar Drum w Vieix Kaba M’Baye

1:30 – 3:00pm: Kutiro Dance w/ Malang Bayo

3:00 – 4:30pm: Djembe Dance w Tènènfig Dioubate

4:30 – 6:00pm: Sere Dance w/ Aida Faty

6:00 - 7:30pm: Sabar w/ Maf Sing Sing  (Paris)

7:30 - 9:00pm: Djembe Dance w/ Lesina Martin

 

Sunday, May 26

9:30 – 11:00am: Sabar w Bakari Fall & Babacar

10:00 – 11:00pm: Sabar Drum w/ Brigo Gueye 

11:00 - 12:30pm: Balante Dance w/ Mariama Basse          

12:30 - 2:00pm: Sabar/Kutiro w/ Lamine Thiam  & Ousman Salle

12:30 - 1:30pm: Sabar Drum w/ Abdou Maty M’Baye

2:00 - 3:30pm: Djembe Dance w/ Oumou Faye

3:30 - 5:00pm: Sabar Dance w/Babacar N’Diaye

5:00 – 6:30pm: Seben / Ndombolo dance w/ Khadijah Koumbassa

The weekend culminates with the Cheikh Tairou M’Baye West African Dance & Drum Performance on Sunday, May 26 at 8:30pm at the Ailey CitiGroup Theater (405 West 55th Street). Tickets are available for purchase at www.aileyextension.com.
