Darkie: Black Aesthetics

Three performances only at the WOW Cafe Theatre

Friday, February 27 at 8:30pm, Saturday, February 28 at 8:30pm and Sunday, March 1 at 3pm

The Incredible, Edible, Akynos and WOW Cafe Theatre give audiences an entertaining Black History education with the second edition of Darkie: Black Aesthetics. A multi-media variety show, Darkie enthralls its audience with ripe and irreverent acts exploring the influence Black and Brown bodies have had on our culture. Using popular references in music, dance, comedy, hip-hop and even burlesque, Darkie reminds audiences that Black History didn't start with slavery, and while Black and Brown culture is evolving in popular media, its history should never be forgotten.

Darkie: Black Aesthetics stars some of the most dynamic NYC entertainers, including Company XIV's Nutcracker Rouge emcee Shelly Watson; twerk master JanTina Parker; burlesque extraordinaire Delysia LaChatte; wordsmith DragonFly; artistic director of Kandake Dance Olga El; dance extraordinaires Carmen Carriker and Kaleef Robertson and ringleader The Incredible, Edible, Akynos. The cast rotates nightly with different surprise guests, and features a wide variety of acts from twerking to rapping to belly dancing to incredible vocals. While each show is different, the message remains the same.

Darkie debuted at  Dixon Place in 2011 with the theme Icons, focusing on legendary and controversial female entertainers like the Jezebel, Josephine Baker and the Hottentot Venus. Each edition of Darkie seeks to embrace Black and Brown culture, dispelling myths while at times embracing stereotypes in order to promote conversations and ideas through different artistic mediums. For more details on the cast, please visit www.wowcafe.org and the event page.
