Five Extravagant Themes
Morgan Griffin presents Five Extravagant Themes at the West End Theater, a culminating thesis performance for her MFA at NYU Tisch Dance on Wednesday May 11th at 8 pm at the West End Theater, 263 W 86th Street.
Five Extravagant Themes is a performative investigation of the solo practice. The evening is comprised of a collection of solos performed by Griffin that represent personal inspirations and admirations. The program will feature Daniel Nagrin’s ‘Strange Hero” (1948), excerpts from Gallim’s “To Create a World” (2019) re-worked by Andrea Miller, an excerpt of Raja Feather Kelly’s “Ugly” (2018), Stephen Petronio’s “Prelude to Weep” from “Underland” (2003), and Griffin’s own version of Yvonne Rainer’s “Hand Movie” (1966).
The works will be performed side by side and offer a glimpse into each choreographer’s world, as embodied by Griffin. At first glance seemingly different, the works share similar themes of mystery, vulnerability, humanity, otherness, wonder, caricature, defeat, and the capacity of the human body to transform the viewers perspective.
