JOYCE SEASON

JOYCE SEASON Paula Lobe and Sondra Groff

Whether he is creating dazzling, complex whirlwinds of movement or tracing the interior landscape of terse gesture, an indelible humanity lives at the core of Doug Varone’s world. The company returns to The Joyce with two premieres and a major revival.

Dome, set to Christopher Rouse’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Trombone Concerto, explores dynamic new territory. Rouse’s haunting score, both lyrically mournful and ragingly grotesque, provides an aural metaphor for tragedy in this full-company World Premiere.

In a rare solo appearance, Doug Varone performs The Fabulist, (NYC premiere) commissioned by American Dance Festival in 2014 to critical acclaim: “Something, probably honesty, makes his movement powerfully touching – you feel like he istelling you secrets in the dark. Do not miss this solo.” The Five Points Star.

Also on the program is a major revival of Varone’s celebrated Castles (2004). Set to Prokofiev’s sweeping Waltz Suite, it examines and debunks fairytale imagery, at times playful and serious.
