Class Description
Kyle Abraham’s master class will emphasize four of the company’s core movement values: exploration, musicality, abandonment, and intuition. The opening warm-up sequence focuses on the fluidity of the spine, articulation, and core body strengthening; and then builds up to challenging, creative and invigorating phrase work. Students will experience a personalized postmodern movement vocabulary full of intricate gestures and signature A.I.M moves.

 

 

Teacher Bio:
Kyle Abraham (Artistic Director of A.I.M) Kyle Abraham was born into hip-hop culture in the late 1970s and grounded in an artistic upbringing in classical cello, piano and the visual arts, Kyle’s work delves into identity through personal history. In collaboration with the company members of A.I.M, he entwines a sensual and provocative vocabulary with a strong emphasis on sound, behavior and all things visual in an effort to create an avenue for personal investigation that can be explored on stage.

Kyle Abraham received his bachelor’s degree in fine arts from SUNY Purchase and a master’s in fine arts from New York University Tisch School of the Arts. In 2014, he received an honorary doctorate in fine arts from Washington Jefferson College. Kyle’s choreography has received much acclaim including a recent Doris Duke Artist Award (2016), City Center Choreography Residency (2015) as well as a MacArthur Fellowship (2013). Earlier awards include a USA Ford Fellowship (2012), a Creative Capital grant, and a Jacob's Pillow Dance Award. In 2010, Abraham received a Bessie Award for Outstanding Performance in Dance for his work in The Radio Show and a Princess Grace Award for Choreography. In 2009, he was selected as one of Dance Magazine's “25 To Watch for”. Kyle Abraham is the recipient of The Joyce Theater Foundations’ 2017-18 Creative Residency Program.

A.I.M brings its “lush movement, infectious music and magnetic dancers” (The New York Times) to Joyce audiences. Returning with his first solo in nearly a decade, Artistic Director Kyle Abraham presents INDY, a Joyce commission created in collaboration with composer-pianist Jerome Begin. The program also features works by guest choreographers Bebe Miller, Doug Varone, and Andrea Miller, who presents a world premiere.
