Malgre Tout

Malgre Tout

Celebrating it’s third full company concert KaNu Dance Theater in association with JCAL at Jamaica Performing Arts Center presents "Malgré Tout.” As per tradition, KDT’s performance season is scheduled in conjunction with the celebration of the Battle of Vertières (Batay Vètyè). Malgré Tout; translates in French to despite all. This term appropriately encapsulates the essence of Batay Vètyè as well as Haiti’s triumphant journey over the past four years: despite it all Haiti is still standing. This season KDT will be premiering exciting collaborative work, created by artists from the New York Haitian community. In the first half of the show catch the premier of a new piece that discusses the contemporary feminist movement in Haiti, choreographed by company member Maxine Montilus in collaboration with Ludwine Joseph (celebrated Christian/Gospel singer; Brooklyn). Also see work by, Buyu Ambroise (international Jazz legend: NYC) and Danse Xpressions Dance Company (multi-genre dance company: Valley Stream, NY). The second half of the evening will feature the company's signature work "Shadow of a Pearl" which beautifully tells the story of Haiti's struggle from slavery to independence.
