Mini-Global Mashup: Turkish meets Klezmer Music
Bilge Günaydın:
Bilge Günaydın is a Turkish jazz pianist, composer, bandleader, and arranger who lives in New York. She started her early education in music at Istanbul University State Conservatory and she had continued her classical piano education at this conservatory for eight years. After her graduation from Istanbul University Law Faculty, she decided to continue her education in the jazz music area. These days, She continues her master’s study in jazz composition with a full scholarship at William Paterson University in New Jersey. She studies with Bill Charlap, Cecil Bridgewater, and Peter Mcguinness. Bilge Günaydın's debut album called “Daydreams” in quintet form was released by Turkish Label Ada Music and Japanese Label Inpartmaint digitally and as CD in 2020. All arrangements, compositions, and productions belong to pianist Bilge Günaydın in this album. She played this album project with her band at Ankara Jazz Festival, Akbank Jazz Days, and Istanbul International Jazz Festival. Also, she is excited about her second album “Sketches of Green” which will be released at the end of April.
In 2019, She won the Youth Jazz Competition that is arranged by Istanbul International Jazz Festival and she played with her trio in this festival in 2019. Also, She got a scholarship from "JM International" in 2015 and 2019. Through this scholarship, she attended the Jazz Improvisation Camp held in Norway. There, She studied with Randy Ingram and Olga Konkova and had the chance to play with Hayden Powell and Bendik Hofseth.
She was also a member of the Istanbul Youth Jazz Orchestra directed by Baki Duyarlar and her big band arrangements and compositions were played by this orchestra in the 24th and 25th Akbank International Jazz Festivals in Istanbul. Also, she played with Nicholas Payton as the pianist of the same orchestra.
In 2017, She attended Siena Jazz Workshop in Italy and she had the chance to play and study with Will Vinson, Susanne Abbuehl, Matt Mitchell, Stefano Battaglia, and many valuable musicians. Also, at the end of 2017, she got an invitation and she played her originals with her trio at Sibiu International Jazz Competition Festival in Romania.

Trumpeter/composer FRANK LONDON is a member of the Klezmatics, Hasidic New Wave, has performed with John Zorn, LL Cool J, Mel Torme, Lester Bowieπs Brass Fantasy, LaMonte Young, They Might Be Giants, David Byrne, Jane Siberry, Ben Folds 5, Mark Ribot, Maurice El Medioni and Gal Costa, and is featured on over 100 cds. His own recordings include INVOCATIONS (cantorial music); Frank Londonπs Klezmer Brass Allstarsπ DI SHIKERE KAPELYE and BROTHERHOOD OF BRASS; NIGUNIM and THE ZMIROS PROJECT (Jewish mystical songs, with Klezmatics vocalist Lorin Sklamberg); THE DEBT (film and theater music); THE SHEKHINA BIG BAND; the soundtrack to THE SHVITZ; the soundtrack to Perl Gluck's THE DIVAHN and four releases with the Hasidic New Wave.
His projects include the folk-opera A NIGHT IN THE OLD MARKETPLACE (based on Y.L. Peretz's Bay nakht oyfn altn mark), DAVENEN for Pilobolus and the Klezmatics, Great Small Works' THE MEMOIRS OF GLUCKEL OF HAMELN and Min Tanaka's ROMANCE. He composed music for John Sayles' THE BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET and MEN WITH GUNS, Yvonne Rainer's MURDER AND MURDER, the Czech-American Marionette Theaterπs GOLEM and Tamar Rogoff's IVYE PROJECT.
He was music director for David Byrne and Robert Wilsonπs THE KNEE PLAYS, collaborated with Palestinian violinist Simon Shaheen, taught Jewish music in Canada, Crimea and the Catskills, and produced CD's for Gypsy Ledgend Esma Redzepova, and Algerian Pianist Maurice el Medioni.
He has been featured on HBOπs SEX AND THE CITY, at the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Lincoln Center Summer Festival, and was a co-founder of Les Miserables Brass Band and the Klezmer Conservatory Band.
