Mr. TOL E. RAncE at The Joyce Theater

illustration of image of dancers in masks with white gloves Christopher Duggan, design by Yichen Chen

Camille A. Brown’s Bessie Award-winning Mr. TOL E. RAncE (2012) explores the  “double consciousness” (W.E.B. DuBois) of the black performer. Black actors were literally and figuratively wearing masks, both while performing in blackface, and in society to survive. Mr. TOL E. RAncE is a fearless, unflinching examination of the endless hurdles black artists have long encountered, yet filled with the artists' joy of inventiveness. Dance Enthusiast wrote “most artists dare not even dream of putting together an act like [Mr. TOL E. RAncE]. Courage sets Camille A. Brown apart from the cookie-cutters."
