Navatman Dance is a Bharatanatyam company based out of Manhattan that takes the vocabulary of the art form as precisely as it can, and innovates within it, altering traditional movements, moods, and music to create work that audiences can ultimately connect with on an emotional level.

True to the style of Navatman Dance works, each program combines a high level of technical difficulty and synchronization, which explores the boundaries of Bharatanatyam and its dancers. Each piece also features another Navatman Dance trademark of simultaneous nritta (pure dance) and abhinaya (expression and mime), which are typically kept separate in Bharatanatyam.

The innovation these programs prize does not lie purely within its conceptual interpretation of mythology, but also in the power of its storytelling through entire group performances – a rare occurrence in Bharatanatyam, which often features solo or principal focused choreographies. As an all-female troupe, the dancers are also forced to explore gender duality in their dance.

We invite you to join us in exploring your individual experience with traditional Indian dance, in an intimate atmosphere, which will take you back to days of old when Bharatanatyam was performed for kings and nobles in courts and temples.
