Film info:

Twenty-three year old director Sibs Shongwe-la Mer's film "Necktie Youth" centers around a generation of young adults that are growing up in post-Apartheid South Africa, the "born free" generation.

This isn't a story of poverty or hardship - it is a film about growing up in a politically "post-racial" society. A film about falling in love with someone of a different race or the same gender. A film about growing up on the internet with the constant flux of swirling global cultural exchange. An online world where feelings are multiplied, amplified, and distorted.

Dealing with the fallout of the tragedy and the mundaneness of their suburban lifestyle they turn to sex, drugs, philosophizing. This is the "summer with the sound turned off so that you can really see it
