Nia & Ness Presents: One Night
A Split bill with Nia & Ness and Suku Dance Lab
One Night will be at FiveMyles on Saturday, November 10th! Doors open at 7pm and the show starts promptly at 7:30pm.
One Night will consist of two works; ANIMA by Suku Dance Lab and home. by Nia & Ness
The night will start of with Suku’s ANIMA. ANIMA is an immersive solo performance that challenges the idea of femininity according to our dominant patriarchal culture. Movements and imageries are drawn from performer’s personal journey and her own subconscious childhood memories, which are then combined with historical research of the women’s role within patriarchal society. Through live performance, original sound scores and prop designs, ANIMA tells the story of a woman who shatters molds and barriers set by society, leaving her with an authentic and unmanufactured version of herself. Learn more about Suku below!
After a short intermission, Nia & Ness will perform an excerpt of their new evening length work: home. With our new piece, home., we are going deeper into the specific positioning of our black, female, women-loving bodies in our current time and space, as well as the way we handle the ancestral and cultural histories flowing through our bodies every second. We are uncovering these histories to better understand the context of our living and the ramifications they have on our relationship. Further, we are digging deeper into our individual stories, moving beyond a focus on the historical contexts of our bodies in shaping how we relate to each other, and delving more deeply into how the personal histories within our bodies shape who we are individually. We are going further into these personal histories to understand the complexities that include race, skin color, gender presentation, sexual orientation, and look closer at economic status, mental health, education, family dynamics, ability, and privilege. home. will fully premiere at Outsider Fest in Austin, Texas, February 2019! Learn more about Nia & Ness below!
