Pasifika Series | Summer 2024 | Mindanao Dances, with Kinding Sindaw

Kinding Sindaw dances in a circle, facing outwards, fans stretched in multiple directions to create a flower-like shape.

WEATHER UPDATE · Due to the rain and possible thunder on Saturday, this workshop has been relocated to La MaMa Galleria.

JUNE · Mindanao Dances, with Kinding Sindaw

Kinding Sindaw returns to the Pasifika Series with indigenous dances from Mindanao, southern Philippines.

This 2-hour, open-level workshop will feature live sarunay music. Participants will be immersed in the living tradition of the indigenous peoples of Mindanao through a somatic experience of ancestral legends, epics, and myths. From the epic, Derangen, these dances encode customary law, a code of ethics, notion of aesthetics, and social values.

The workshop will focus on Kaeg-Manisan (dance of emotion) and Pangalay, a genre originating from the Tausog, "People of the Strong Current." Malong (sarong) welcome.
