Dipping into the archives of his past repertory, Arthur Avilés revives Real Men a dance he created in 2004. This seemingly abstract dance set to two of Bach's Goldberg variations brings together 6 dancers who engage in sometimes tender, sometimes abrupt, sometimes balanced objective interactions. The dance is open enough to allow each audience member to contemplate what might be going on. The dance happens through duets, quartets and full group interactions culminating in the entire group entangled figuratively and literally.

 

The title "Real Men" may imply that only cisgender men only need apply, yet the spirit of the dance embraces all who are interested in engaging in its activities. I intend to cast the dance in as diverse a population as possible given who would be interested. The dance requires its participants to be nude. The aspect of nudity in this dance is not just conceptual it is literal, for in this case the literal can reveal the conceptual. The truth of “what you see is what you get” is revealed in the bodies and interactions of the individuals involved. All or no genders are welcome to audition.

Dancers trained in Contemporary dance, Modern dance, Contact Improvisation, various forms of African dance, Capoeira, Hip Hop, Ballet etc.. 

Rehearsals begin the week of April 14 and continue once a week for 3 hours each week until the performance on Friday, June 21 at 8pm at BAAD! The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance. The rehearsal schedule will be decided with all dancers’ schedules in mind and rehearsals will take place at BAAD! in the Bronx and at a downtown location. Dancers are compensated $17.50 per rehearsal hour and $250 flat fee for the performance.
