On the sand at Beach 86th

Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener, former Cunningham dancers who frequently collaborate at venues such as MoMa PS1, The Chocolate Factory, New York Live Arts, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Danspace Project, REDCAT, ICA Boston, will premiere new material at Beach Sessions. Mitchell and Riener’s collaborative work revels in the possibilities of the highly articulated dancing body where current and historical influences and aesthetic forms are collapsed into a hybrid physical and visually charged language. They have been particularly interested in creating dance in response to complex and active spatial environments.

Netta Yerushalmy, a Guggenheim and NYFA fellow, will be presenting an installment from her new project Paramodernities, which involves systematic de-creations of iconic choreographies paired with essays by scholars. Paramodernities is supported by Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Watermill Center, Alvin Ailey New Directions Choreography Lab, Movement Research, and LMCC’s 2016-17 Extended Life program.

Beach Sessions’ mission is to support creativity in the Rockaways, facilitate public engagement with contemporary dance on the peninsula, and inspire sustained investment in the natural beauty of the Rockaway shoreline. Beach Sessions Dance Series is curated and organized by Sasha Okshteyn.

Following the performances, Surfrider Foundation, an organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans and beaches, will host a beach-cleanup sponsored by Rockaway Brewing + Company.

The series is funded in part by the Queens Arts Fund with public funds from NYC DCA GNYADF and NYSCA DEC Community Arts, and Partnership for Parks Capacity Fund Grant, made possible by the City Parks Foundation thanks to the Park Equity Initiative of the New York City Council under the leadership of speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. Additional support is provided by Rockaway Artists Alliance, Black & White Project Space, Surfrider Foundation, Rockaway Brewing + Company, Offseason Rockaway, Rockaway Retreat House, and City Parks Department.
