The title "One of Four" comes from the statistic that 1 out of every 4 women will be raped in college in the United States. We are acutely aware that gender-based violence is a highly sensitive issue. Tabula Rasa Dance Theater has the deepest respect for survivors of emotional and physical abuse. Many of us, directly or indirectly, have been irreversibly harmed by abuse.* Through movement, we are sharing our outrage and our pain. We believe dance has transformative powers and the potential to inspire compassion and empathy. In the piece, three female-identifying dancers and two gender- nonconforming dancers will partner with manikins representing their abusers. These life-size, cumbersome figures will symbolize how the trauma of emotional and physical abuse is a weight borne by victims forever.
