Inspired by images of floating buoys, pop-diva feminism, and the notion of a “strong woman,” E/D’s latest work, "Bounce Bounce", unpacks the assumption that physical resiliency and emotional buoyancy are inextricably linked. In both formal dance training and femininity, bodily perfection and control are the dominant tropes. As such, physical performance typically becomes bound up with pleasure in, and identification with, an able, flexible, legible body—a body that performs “strong woman.” Such bodies are schooled to enact resiliency, but what happens when they can’t or won’t bounce back? Using sound, light and imaginative affect as material, E/D inhabits composer Jascha Narveson’s arresting soundscapes with lighting design by Andy Dickerson.

Mei Yamanaka Works returns with a new work that underscores the choreographer’s penchant for nonlinear but studiously articulate storytelling. Marked by attention to the nuances of the body in motion and in pause, Mei’s dances also emphasize careful pacing, surprising use of space, and striking sense of play. The quizzical and earnest narratives she suggests are informed by daily life as much as by major events, and are ultimately deeply felt gifts that ignite audiences' imaginations.
