“You Can’t Have This (working title)” is a work for 5 performers exploring escapism as a necessary form of queer self care. Queer people come of age hyper-aware that they are different. Those who embrace theatrics can imagine exaggerated versions of themselves to celebrate, sometimes cope their outsider status… often to captive audiences. Using movement and original text, You Can’t Have This details how growing up “other” makes space for creating our most fantastical selves.

About the Artist: Brendan Drake is a Brooklyn based interdisciplinary artist who uses theatricality and disparate dance forms to create stylized performance spectacles. His work has been presented at HERE Arts Center, La MaMa Experimental Theatre, Abrons Arts Center, Triskelion Arts, Gowanus Loft, the CURRENT SESSIONS, Industry City Distillery, The Tank, Dixon Place and he was the proud recipient of a 2015 CUNY Dance Initiative Grant and residency through Baruch College. In addition to his work for the stage, Brendan choreographed the fall 2014 “Equality = Love” campaign for Adidas Originals/Pharrell Williams and commercial spots for Thursday Island (Korea), Kate Spade, and Hermes. He has also served as movement coordinator on editorial shoots for Elle Magazine, Cate Blanchett, and Lorde. Brendan received his BFA in Dance from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he was also a recent Artist in Residence. He is a proud fiscally sponsored artist through Fractured Atlas and certified Pilates Mat and Apparatus Practitioner through the Kane School for Core Integration.
