presents the 2023 Touring Season
July 26 - August 4, 2023

Get ready for a spectacular dance concert by the Young Dancemakers Company!

-Each concert promises to be an unforgettable experience for all dance enthusiasts:

-Experience an exciting one-hour concert featuring original dances created and performed by an ensemble of New York City teens.

-Pieces feature original music by professional composers, in addition to live percussion by Music Director, William Catanzaro.

-See an excerpt from Four Corners choreographed by Ronald K. Brown, performed by the Young Dancemakers Company.

-The concert is followed by a free interactive audience workshop in on-the-spot dance-making.

-PLUS a post-concert Q&A with the company.

-All concerts are family friendly and best for ages 8 and up.

All performances are FREE and open to the public.

The finale concert will include a tribute to beloved YDC Founder Alice Teirstein, who passed away in November 2022. The evening will include tributes to Alice, photos and videos from past seasons and a special performance by a select group of YDC alumni. All attendees are invited to join us for a post-concert reception at The Ailey Studios following the performance.

 

Young Dancemakers Company, founded in 1996 by Alice Teirstein, is a unique, tuition-free, dance ensemble of students drawn from NYC’s public high schools working under the guidance of acclaimed professionals. Young Dancemakers Company (YDC) presents a free concert of their unique, original choreography based on meaningful personal and social themes. The group dances to both live and recorded music, made in collaboration with professional composers. The company will perform their latest works and an excerpt from Four Corners, choreographed by Ronald K. Brown.

The one-hour concert will be followed by lively dance-making with the audience, led by the company, plus a post-concert Q&A.

The 2023 DANCERS/CHOREOGRAPHERS are: Fabricio Aguilera, Shahab Aldeeb, Merline Auguste, Paul-Lisa Brown, Harmony Carrasquillo, Mariam Dembele, Cree Atkins Griffin, Neilani James, Alyssa Martin, Jackelyn Martinez, Iniyah Razack, Anayah Santos, Ashley Smith. They are students from Repertory Company High School for Theatre Arts, John Jay High School For Law, Talent Unlimited High School, Wadleigh Secondary School for the Performing & Visual Arts, John Dewey High School, Fordham High School for the Arts, Maspeth High School, Edward R Murrow High School, New Visions High School, ​​Medgar Evers College Preparatory School.

The 2023 YDC FACULTY includes: Artistic Director of YDC, choreographer Jessica Gaynor; YDC Music Director and acclaimed composer William Catanzaro; YDC Associate Program Manager Ivi Whitehead (YDC alum); Costume Designer Wendy Kahn; 2023 Guest Repertory Artist Ronald K. Brown/ EVIDENCE, A Dance Company (dancer and rehearsal director Demetrius Burns will teach daily classes and coach the company on an excerpt from Four Corners, choreographed by Ronald K. Brown); Bridgman|Packer Dance will lead a Partnering Dance Workshop; Finale Concert Lighting Designer Andy Dickerson; Photographer Alice Chacon (YDC alum); Creative Arts Consultant Eva Young; Studio Assistant and Stage Manager Kiana King (YDC alum); Program Assistant and Alumni Choreographer Tiana Ayala (YDC alum); Composers Clifton Anderson, Sidney Marquez Boquiren, Colton Dodd, Matt Evans, Kevin Farrell, Matt Frey, Mitch Marcus, Jerome Morris, Anna Young, Victor See Yuen will be collaborating one-on-one with the choreographers as part of the special YDC Choreographer/Composer Project.
