Join Dance Iquail, in partnership with Dance/NYC and Harlem Arts Alliance, for a free town hall titled Black Swan: Solidarity Beyond Colored Pointe Shoes, which will examine the importance of resilience as seen in the stresses on black artists, communities and institutions. A panel of women of color, along with Iquail Shaheed, in the ballet world will consider how dance as an art form is placed to help organizations and individuals adapt and recover from the shock and stress of racial segregation, diminished resources, and social disenfranchisement.

This town hall is part of an community engagement campaign surrounding Dance Iquail's Black Swan, a new 75 minute dance based production choreographed by Shaheed to the music of artist/activist Nina Simone (1933-2003). The project explores the experience of the black ballerina as a window into issues of race, identity, and isolation, incorporating elements of performance art to investigate these psychological tensions.
Dance Iquail uses the art of dance as a conduit for combating issues of social injustice primarily experienced by the disadvantaged.
Harlem Arts Alliance is a network based arts service organization comprised of established and emerging visual and performing artists, art lovers, businesses and organizations that serve the arts and culture community in Harlem and the Greater New York City area.
