AUDITIONS for IYOM: Theatrical Production looking for dancers in West African style
IYOM is the story of a family of Nigerian immigrants struggling to uphold the ancestral traditions of Igbo culture while raising an American born daughter, Zaki. When Zaki's mysterious grandmother moves in, things take a turn for the magical. IYOM is a straight play with the dancers playing an integral rol
Below is the monologue to work with. What we're looking for are energetic dancers who are able to tell a story and express their character and curiosity while helping to tell the stories of Zaki's world. The masquerades embody the spirt of Nigeria and the movement of traditional Nigerian dance. We are not necessarily looking for a literal interpretation of the words but dancers who can illuminate the spirit of the story and create interesting, physical characters. We will have a reader read the monologue for you while you move.
ZAKI
One day Rose and Tulip were hard at work doing what flowers do. Growing and smelling and making sure they blossom right. But Juniper, good ol’ Juney, was wilting. She was bored. Sick and tired of staying planted with nothing to do but grow. So Juney went to Daddy Tree and begged for something fun to do. She wanted to pull up her roots and fly all around the world. But he didn’t understand cause he couldn’t remember what it was like to be a kid since adults never do. But God heard Juney’s complaint, and he didn’t like to see a little girl wilt. So God decided he’d do something to lift her spirits. Every day he’d throw Juney a special party when the sun was taking a break and the flowers weren’t so busy growing. He gave Juney, Tulip, and Rose... Stars!
