GROUNDWORK RESIDENCY: Emerging Artist Residency, Space Grant and Professional Development Intensive

The Cora Studio, home of the professional company Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance in Red Hook, Brooklyn, is offering a uniquely comprehensive residency experience that provides substantial support to 2-4 emerging choreographers who are in their first 5 years of making work in NYC. Groundwork offers substantial space to artists to develop new work, plus artistic and administrative mentorship to help ensure strong infrastructure, financial stability and a sense of community in the dance field. Artists should possess both a distinctive choreographic vision and an interest in fulfilling that vision long-term in NYC.

 

Between January and June 2015, each selected artist is provided with the following:

 

- 80 hours of rehearsal space at The Cora Studio, a 750 square foot unobstructed rehearsal space with sprung Marley floor, mirrors (with covers), high-ceilings and sound system.

 

- A meet-and-greet roundtable and intake meeting (Thursday, January 8 from 6-9pm) between artists and Cora's staff to assist artists in how to best utilize the resources provided during the program, familiarize

artists with the space and encourage networking and accessing of one another throughout the program;

 

- Direct access to Cora Artistic Director, Shannon Hummel and Managing Director, Michelle Grazio who will be informally available to attend rehearsals, give feedback and guidance, and to assist each artist in outlining immediate and more long-term artistic and infrastructural goals.

 

- 1 informal showing/feedback session Thursday, April 16, 7-9pm and a formal culminating performance event including lighting, tech staff, etc. in The Cora Studio performance space, Thursday, June 18 at 8 pm.

 

- Free enrollment in an intensive career development workshop day focusing on the basics of surviving, managing and enjoying a career in the field of dance. These workshops cover the basics of budgeting, marketing, fundraising, artistic and mission statement creation and effective calendar/timeline planning. (Workshop date: Saturday, February 7 from 9:30am-5pm.)

 

- Printed marketing materials, online and social media visibility related to the residency and its culminating performance event.

 

GROUNDWORK GUIDELINES AND RESTRICTIONS:

 

- Applicants must be in their first 5 years of presenting their choreography in NYC. Choreography presented while enrolled in a university dance program does not count. Groundwork is not open to those currently enrolled in a college or university dance program.

 

- Applicants must reside in one of the 5 boroughs of NYC and be pursuing a choreographic career in the field of dance in New York.

 

- Applicants must have presented at least one choreographic work in NYC in the past two years. Work can be any length and productions can be presented by a venue or self-produced.

 

- All disciplines of dance may apply with a few exceptions: Due to being a second floor studio, artists working in tap, flamenco or other highly percussive forms that require substantial stamping on the floor

are restricted from applying.

 

- Artists may book space and rehearse whenever the space is available. (Please note: Generally, availability is extremely limited between the hours of 2 and 6pm Monday-Friday.)

 

- Availability for meeting, workshop, informal showing and performance dates listed above should be confirmed before applying. Please DO NOT apply if you know you are not available for the

culminating performance on June 18.

GROUNDWORK RESIDENCY APPLICATION:

 

Submit via email, numbered in this order, the following information along with a $20 Application Fee by MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3 AT 5PM. Please attach as a PDF the following:

 

1: A current bio (300 words max)

 

2: Describe briefly who you are as an artist. This may be your formal artistic statement or a less formal description related to your choreographic vision, voice or process. (300 words max)

 

3: Describe the work you envision creating during this residency. (300 words max)

 

4: List the date and venue/location of the FIRST performance of your choreography in NYC (mandatory) along with up to two additional performances of your work at other times in NYC (optional). In addition, list the work title, length, and cast of the work(s) you presented at these performances. (Note: Performances while enrolled in a university dance program do not count. Groundwork is not open to those currently enrolled in a college or university dance program.)

 

5: Describe your current administrative structure. Be honest. If you have no structure and are drowning in all the "desk-work", say so. If you have a solid staff structure, say that as well. This is purely informational and does not count toward or against you as an artist. If you do have others helping, briefly describe their roles and what they do to assist you. (150 words max)

 

6: Provide links to 1-2 samples of recent work (performed in the past 4 years). TOTAL running time for work samples should be no more than 12 minutes. List title, venue and any other credits you feel are important or any necessary instructions for viewing.

 

SUBMISSION INFO: Completed applications and $20 application fee must be submitted online by MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3 at 5 pm. Late applications will not be considered. Please submit completed application, attached as a PDF document to residency@coradance.org with the word "GROUNDWORK" followed by the Artists Name in the subject line. (i.e. GROUNDWORK: JANE DOE.) The $20 fee must be submitted online at www.coradance.org by clicking on the "Donate" tab in the top right of the homepage. On the payment/donation page write Groundwork in the memo line.
