The SPACE GRANT PROGRAM of BAX | BROOKLYN ARTS EXCHANGE is designed to give NYC based dance, theater and performance artists the opportunity to create new work in a setting that is conducive to working deeply and exploring new territory. 2018 space grantees will be offered at least one advisory session with Marya Warshaw, Executive/Artistic Director, and/or an assigned BAX artist advisor.  Advisory sessions may include discussions about future engagements, fundraising, artistic practice or other topics as suggested by individual artists & advisors.

BAX is actively seeking artists who can demonstrate a need for use of BAX space and the ability to work effectively. Artists who have received previous space grants must wait three years before reapplying.  For example, if you received a grant in 2014/2015 (or earlier) you may reapply in 2018.

PLEASE NOTE:

-For NYC residents in all 5 boroughs
-Applicants MAY NOT APPLY to the 2018-19 Artist in Residence Program
-Applicants may apply to ONLY ONE Space Grant Program, Either Summer or Fall
-Summer Grant Work Period: June 1-August 17, 2018
-Fall Grant Work Period: September 4-December 1, 2018 | Showcase, Friday-Saturday, Nov. 30 – Dec. 1, 2018.

THE SPACE GRANT PROGRAM:

BAX offers two different types of Space Grants. Grant #1 (Summer) is a work period, Grant #2 (Fall) is a work period with a performance component. Both Space Grants include 100 hours of free rehearsal space. Summer Space Grantees will participate in a Show & Share Tuesday, August 7 from 7-9 pm to share 5-10 minutes of work developed and participate in conversation with other space grantees, Marya Warshaw, BAX staff, and artist advisors. Fall Space Grantees will have an interim Show & Share Saturday, November 3 from 2-4pm and a showcase weekend Friday-Saturday, Nov. 30 – Dec. 1, 2018

Grant #1 Summer Space Grant – Work Period only (June 1-August 17)

The Summer Space Grant includes 100 free rehearsal hours to be used between June 1-August 17, 2018 on weekday evenings or weekends only. It is ideal for an artist who already has a performance commitment for Fall 2018 and cannot abide by the exclusionary period BAX requires for the Fall Space Grant. It is also most ideal for an artist who is embarking on a research period for an upcoming work and does not wish to present. Summer Space Grantees will participate in a Show & Share Tuesday, August 7 from 7-9 pm to share 5-10 minutes of work developed during the residency and participate in conversation with other space grantees, Marya Warshaw, BAX staff, and artist advisors.

Grant #2  Fall Space Grant – Work Period (September 4-December 1) including a Showcase Weekend

In addition to 100 free rehearsal hours, the Fall Space Grant includes a two-night performance showcase Friday-Saturday, Nov. 30 – Dec. 1, 2018. It gives artists an opportunity to perform the work (or an excerpt) developed during the space grant in front of an audience. This two-night showcase format includes a post-performance discussion. A performance stipend is provided in addition to the awarded rehearsal space.  Fall Space Grantees will have an interim showing Saturday, November 3 from 2-4pm to share 5-10 minutes of work developed and participate in conversation with other space grantees, Marya Warshaw, BAX staff, and artist advisors.

At least three artists will be selected for each grant period. Summer and Fall Space Grants include 100 hours of free rehearsal space to be used in any of our four rehearsal spaces located in the BAX BUILDING at 421 Fifth Avenue, Park Slope.
