Production Description

SHE by playwright and choreographer Jinah Parker is a provocative choreoplay that uses dance, drama, music, and film to interweave stories of sexual violence against women and girls, Sandra Bland, and healing. Joining the themes of The Vagina Monologues and For Colored Girls…. in the 21st century, SHE is also inspired by current and historical events, as well as research, interviews, and Parker’s own family story. SHE employs a diverse ensemble of actors and dancers utilizing monologue/dialogue and various forms of classic and modern movements to bring these stories of empowerment to the world.

About Jinah

I am a native daughter of Buffalo, New York. A multi-faceted dancer, choreographer, educator, playwright, and healer with a Masters Degree in Dance Education from New York University, a B.A. in Dance from the University at Buffalo, where I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa National Honors Society, and recently licensed as a practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming under founder Richard Bandler.

My most recent work “SHE” combines dance, theater, film, music; and “SHE” is an artistic mirror of our past and present political and social climates. “With ‘SHE,” Jinah parker triumphs Over A Culture That Abuses Woman” (The Village Voice) and extends the stage with interactive conversations and educational tools.” Today my work has led me to teach internationally while receiving generous support from Eve Ensler, creator of The Vagina Monologues;” actress and best-selling author Gabrielle Union; NBA Hall of Famer Grant Hill; Elle magazine; and The National Organization of Women.

About The Company

The Jinah Parker Project is a non-profit arts organization created to inspire people of all backgrounds through dance, choreography, education and social media. Tackling major social issues in America and globally Jinah views dance as a transformative tool to encourage cultural exchange, courageous conversations, and individual and community action. In short Jinah’s art is for ‘the people” and is inspired by everyday people. Her newest major effort in that regard is SHE, a Choreoplay that deals with issues around sexual violence against women and girls, what happens to women like Sandra Bland, and it is about empowerment and healing.

SHE utilizes dance, drama, song, and video to highlight what the New York Times Magazine has called one of the major human rights issues of the 21st century: gender violence. Workshopped twice at New York Live Arts – run by legendary dancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones – SHE was completely sold out at both performances.  The production continued to develop in Spring of 2017 during its 15 show run at New York City’s HERE Arts Center.  She continues to tour nationally as we work towards our Off-Broadway debuted.

With SHE Jinah has created the template for her work going forward, a template, which includes performance, conversation, and curriculum. Additionally, Jinah uses an aesthetic she describes as “distorted beauty,” which takes classic dance lines and breaks the rules, resulting in crisp and electrifying new movements. That is the vision and mission of The Jinah Parker Project: Dance. Choreography. Education.
