On Sunday, December 6th at 1:00 pm, Kenya Joy Gibson will be hosting an Afro-Modern Intensive at On Your Toes Dance Studio in Brooklyn, NY.

Kenya Joy Gibson 

Kenya Joy Gibson is a native of Brooklyn, New York. At the age of four, she started her formal training at the Dance Theatre of Harlem. She attended Talent Unlimited Performing Arts High School in NYC and LIU Post, receiving her BFA in Dance Studies in 2014. At Post, she performed with and choreographed for the Post Concert Dance Company and worked with established choreographers such as Michael Leon Thomas, Patricia Ann Kenny, Khaleah London, and Fritzlyn Hector.

She has choreographed several works, produced concerts, hosted community and school workshops, and has performed in various theaters such as Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts,  Symphony Space, The Ailey Citigroup Theater, The Salvatore Capezio Theater, and many more.

Kenya has performed with Fritzlyn Hector’s Artist Ensemble. She is a company member with Forces of Nature Dance Theatre under the direction of Abdel Salaam. With Forces, they won the 2017 Bessie Award for ‘The Healing Sevens’ for Outstanding Performance at DanceAfrica 2017 at BAM. Kenya was featured in the New York Times for her performance in Saya Woolfalk’s “ChimaTEK” installation and was featured in Spike Lee's “Art of Daring” campaign for Cadillac.

Kenya recently graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Master's in Dance Education from the Arnhold Graduate Dance Education Program in May 2020. She also received special recognition at this year's commencement as the recipient of the award for Outstanding Choreography. As a professional choregrapher, dancer, educator, and researcher, Kenya is committed to cultivating new methods of reclaiming and retaining the African Diaspora's legacy and recently premiered a work entitled "Honor" that pays homage to our ancestors who journeyed through the Middle Passage. Ms. Gibson is pleased to announce that "Honor" will be performed within the tri-state and internationally in 2021.
