Power of Truths/Hiphop history: Seeking Performance/Choreographer/Dancer

Proposal for choreographer/dancer for “Know the Ledge: Hiphop History Live”

Background:

The Power of Truths Arts & Education Festival envisions a world where arts and education are utilized to bring about communities where justice and equity are the standards, not outliers. We center the practice that the arts and humanities are powerful tools to envision and create a more just world.

The Power of Truths Arts and Education Festival presents “Know the Ledge: Hiphop History Live” on Saturday, April 29, 2023—part theatre, part dance, part history lesson, part Hiphop music, artists Akrobatik, members of Fire in Little Africa – Written Quincey, Krisheena Suarez, and iamDES, Marcia Gomes, Khalif Neville, and more will take the crowd on an intense and entertaining trip through history.

The Power of Truths Arts & Education Festival is a project of Self-Evident Education, a non-profit organization.

The gig:

Choreograph and perform a solo piece inspired by the story of William and Ellen Craft; the piece should embody the character of Ellen. (see below for context)

Logistics:

  • We will give you an audio track that will accompany the dance

  • The piece will be somewhere between five and ten minutes long (to be discussed)

  • Tech rehearsal will be on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 3 pm at the Bombyx Center for Arts and Equity in Florence, MA

  • An appearance fee will be paid ($500)

The Story:

William and Ellen Craft self-emancipated from slavery. Ellen was bi-racial and “looked white”. They escaped by having Ellen dress up as a white man and pretend that William was her enslaved valet.
