Boston Dance Theater - SURGE Fellowship on Martha's Vineyard!
Company: Boston Dance Theater
Location: Medford, MA
Compensation: Selected artists will receive a $100 stipend for their participation in the June performances.
SURGE: MARTHA’S VINEYARD COASTAL COMMUNITY ARTIST FELLOWSHIP 2024
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH: THE TRUSTEES, THE YARD, NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS
THE OPPORTUNITY: A creative residency for a group of performing artists residing on Martha’s Vineyard to reflect on the impacts of local climate events, build on existing narratives of resilience to climate change, and to envision a thriving future for the Martha’s Vineyard community through artistic presentation. Fellows will share stories and be guided through the creation of movement and spoken word to be presented during a culminating performance outdoors, on Martha’s Vineyard, alongside Boston Dance Theater's performance of SURGE. While Boston Dance Theater will provide scientific and artistic material as prompts for thinking and generating movement and spoken word, Fellows will be encouraged to draw upon their individual artistic and cultural backgrounds, practices, and climate experiences during the creative process. The final performance will give voice to these individual backgrounds and experiences, which we hope will yield a unique cultural expression of art.
WHO SHOULD APPLY: We encourage diversity in pool applicants and encourage tribal members and people of color and members of LGBTQAI+ to apply. Artists ages high school and above with a strong artistic practice and movement background. Experience of creating and performing their own work is not required, but is suggested. No prior experience with art+science processes is required. Interest in making work that is at the intersection of performance art and climate justice is a must. While formal dance or theater movement training is not a requirement, applicants should expect to engage in creative movement exploration, including improvisation prompts.
WHEN: Six residency sessions will take place over the course of 2 weeks: April 1-5, 2024 and June 17-22, 2024. The final performances will take place at the end of the final residency week in June 2024.
WHERE: Residency sessions will be in person, indoors and outdoors at a community venue on Martha’s Vineyard. Performances will be held outdoors on June 21+22, 2024 at Long Point Wildlife Refuge, Vineyard Haven, MA.
