Battery Dance's 2019 Battery Dance Festival is quickly approaching! The festival is August 11-16 at Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park in downtown Manhattan with a Closing performance at Schimmel Center at Pace University on August 17.

 

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are needed at the festival to help with daily production set-up, host the entrance tables, greet audience members and hand-out playbills. In addition, volunteers are needed to help with activities related to our closing event on August 17 and dance workshops throughout the week.

 

Benefits include free dance performances in a beautiful park, gaining experience in dance production, taking part in the downtown dance community and making new friends and connections!

History

Produced by Battery Dance in association with Battery Park City Authority, the Battery Dance Festival is New York City’s longest-running free public dance festival.  Established in 1982 by President and Artistic director Jonathan Hollander, the Festival gathers a combined audience of 12,000 people over the course of one week.

 

It provides a unique opportunity for both professional and emerging dancers and choreographers to present original works of high artistic merit in a free public forum. The Festival revels in the panoply of dance that our NYC offers, with strong emphasis on the inclusion of diverse dance styles and an international roster of performers.

Deep interest in supporting community programs through arts
A clear sense of commitment and responsibility
Positive and enthusiastic attitude
Minimum age: 16
No special requirements are needed

Volunteer Opportunities Specifics

Workshop Helpers (only for first shift, 10am-2pm)

Volunteers will assist Battery Dance’s staff members with Workshop registration and take photos of the event at the Battery Dance Studio

Playbills

Greet and inform audience members and hand out playbills

Stage Hands

Volunteers will assist Battery Dance’s production director Barry Steele with activities related to set up and strike. This includes but is not limited to taping Marley floor and setting up tents, chairs, bleachers, and dressing rooms. Striking is required every evening.

Artist Assistant

Artist Assistant Volunteers will assist the various companies and dancers in whatever they need before taking the stage. Artist Assistants will also assist with workshops by coming in to the studio early and checking dancers in for classes.

Crowd Control

Volunteers in charge of crowd control will be asked to count the crowd as they get settled, help audience members find their seats on the bleachers, and stop audience members from going into restricted sections of the park. Crowd Control Volunteers will also encourage the filling out of questionnaires, collect filled questionnaires, and help with event set-up before performances.

Assist at Merchandise Tables/Stations

Assist Battery Dance staff or interns with merchandise.  Volunteers may also be asked to help collect donations, pass out playbills, and set up entrance tables before performances.
